The book is listed on Amazon.com which is linked to the Military Brats site and lists the book and author I have in mind. Another site I explored off the Brats site was "Famous Military Brats". I did not read the whole list, however Pat Conroy, THE GREAT SANTINI, was on the list as must be the writer of the book I found. I am not good with titles and authors staying in my brain. I did receive a sense of family and community; this book was life changing. I do have roots, I was the product of a value system, and I carried that into my civilian life role. I feel all military offspring can learn something of value from this reading. I also feel strongly that all adults who live and/or work with military offspring should read this book. We are a unique community. It would be great if we alumni of QHS could present a gift to the current students. An assembly with a speaker whose theme is an elaboration of this wonderful-awful life could be such a gift. We could also think of begining a scholarship fund. It would take about $20,000 to produce interest enough but we do have at least that many alumni to petition. These are some thoughts, I am great at thinking things up. There must be others who are good at turning ideas into the real thing. I know Frank Harris is in Tuscon, AZ . I do not know of an email address for him. In this message I sent to his dad, thinking it was Sandy, I told him my life history for the past 35 years, and I told him I remembered fondly the night we painted the water tower, and the time someone and I (I think maybe it was Tim McArtor) broke into the principal's office and rifled the files to ascertain Sandy's middle name. When Col. Hunt responded, I told him I was glad that I hadn't confessed to any more crimes than I had. Sandy is retired from the State Department, and I know that in the past he hasn't wanted his e-mail address distributed on account of State Department matters, but I'll tell him to contact you if it's all right to put him on the list now that he's retired. I'm so pleased because he says he'll probably be coming my way within the next month or so, and we'll visit. The last time I saw him was when he came through Austin as a Marine Lieutenant in 1968. Reading all the alumni info. is so much fun. I stayed up until 2 AM on Saturday reading about everyone. I am so grateful to you, Greg, for all the hard work in keeping us connected. Now for my history: My dad went to Okinawa during my senior year, so we went to Iowa to live while he was gone. I applied to schools in NC and VA, but he got orders for San Diego and said the east coast was out of the question. At the last minute, I found a small liberal arts college to attend. I graduated in '69 with a teaching certificate. I moved to San Diego and met my husband at the Officer's Club on a Friday night! He got out of the Marines in '72 and moved to TX (although he is originally from AL-War Eagle). We were married in '73 and 3 children in 3 yrs. Erin is 31 and getting married on New Years Eve, Tim, 29, got married in '03 and gave me my first grandchild 1 1/2 weeks ago (so I didn't make the reunion), and Mollie, 28, was married last April. Erin and Tim live in Dallas and Mollie lives in Austin. I have been a stay at home mom for 30 years and have finally put me degree to use teaching special education at a middle school in Plano. I am enjoying my third year teaching even though most of the teachers my age are retiring. The thing I miss the most is my great Bible study.
